8 Steps to Write a Speech – The Disadvantages of Smoking

Hello again,

One of the most popular questions you can get out of the PT3 tests is to write a SPEECH.

Personally, I’d be happy if I had gotten this question, mainly because:

  1. There is a certain way to start and end the essay.
  2. Present tense all the way.
  3. The topic is given.

So here I’d like to show you some tips on how to go about when you write a speech.

STEP 1: Read the question

Again it is VERY IMPORTANT to know what the question wants.

STEP 2: Opening for A Speech

You always start a speech by greeting your audience.

You can be creative , you can stick to the old-fashioned way. No one can say you are wrong.

Here is an example. If you like it, ambil la…

No matter what you try to do, you have to:

  1. Address your audience
  2. Tell them your ‘Topic’

STEP 3: Ladies and Gentlemen

Many people like to use this many times. But to me, I only use it right before I start sharing my important points. So here is my Ladies and Gentlemen.

STEP 4: Write an Intro, Tell the Facts.

This ‘intro’ after your first paragraph is going to help you set your standard. It is hard for me to show you how to write this as it depends on how good your general knowledge is.

In short, throw in whatever facts/false facts/temporary facts that you think might suit the topic. Tell people what it is about. A little bit of background knowledge that can help them to understand the topic better. Just like how you will tell people about your pet cat.

You can make it simple, you can show off your statistics. If you want more examples, go to my previous post (See step 3) where I talk about it in details.

Just remember to link it back to your topic at the end of the paragraph. Like this:

STEP 5:  Connecting word + Main Point

After you have the introduction, now is the time to write your content. It is important to use CONNECTING WORDS to help you arrange your thoughts and ideas.

Use connecting words(Penandawacana):

  • First of all/Firstly/First and foremost -pertama sekali
  • Secondly – yang kedua
  • Next – seterusnya
  • Besides/other than that/not only that- selain itu
  • Also – dan juga
  • After that- selepas itu
  • Lastly/Last but not least/Finally- Akhirnya/Yang terakhir
  • In conclusion- kesimpulannya
*You must also remember this: 1 paragraph –> 1 main point

Here is how you can arrange your ideas:

Repeat the same thing for all your important points until every important point is well-elaborated. Like this:

STEP 6: ANSWER THE EXTRA QUESTION in 1 PARAGRAPH

Maybe you do not need to do this, but I find that many teachers actually like that if you write long enough for the extra thing they ask in the question. Like this:

Gentle reminder for teachers: Many students tend to overlook this part, do what you can to remind them. Knock them out if necessary.

STEP 7: Say THANK YOU

As usual, you’ve got to thank your audience.

STEP 8: Check your work

Once you have your stuff done, You SHOULD always check your work. Check your format, check your tenses, check your spelling, anything. A simple read through will also help!

I hope this gives you a little bit of idea to start writing your own speech.

Happy Learning , Happy Teaching.
